Who is Jenna Nighswonger? The US International Linked with Arsenal Move
Exploring Jenna Nighswonger's career, her impact in the NWSL and on the US national team, and recent speculation surrounding a potential move to Arsenal.
Introduction:
As the packed away end at Stamford Bridge watched, myself included, Naomi Girma—arguably the best defender in the world right now—stepped onto the field to a roaring stadium of blue, unveiled as Chelsea’s latest high-profile signing. It was no surprise; most saw this coming. Yet, it highlighted a sobering reality for Arsenal: they remain stagnant in the transfer market while trailing Chelsea significantly in the title race.
I couldn’t help but feel disappointed. Arsenal’s bench lacked real impact, and their squad needs reinforcements—a winger, a midfielder, perhaps even a fullback—to come anywhere close to matching Chelsea’s depth. And it’s depth, among other factors, that wins titles.
So, you can imagine my relief when posts started circulating last night about Arsenal’s rumoured interest in a new signing. But with the final days of the transfer window looming, time is running out. Arsenal are reportedly close to signing US international Jenna Nighswonger.
For those, like me, who’ll admit to not watching much NWSL football, you might not know much about her as a player. Here’s a quick overview to help fill the gap on this Tuesday morning as we await what could be a pivotal announcement for Arsenal.
Who is Jenna Nighswonger?
The first thing that stood out as I sat on my sofa last night, browsing articles, websites, and watching highlights, was the question: what position does Jenna Nighswonger actually play? Reports label her a defender, Gotham lists her as a midfielder, and some even suggest she plays further forward at times. At just 24 years old, she’s considered a young talent, a status reinforced by winning the NWSL Rookie of the Month award twice during the 2023 season. While most refer to her as a left back, it’s clear she brings much more to the table—she’s far from your traditional fullback.
Born in California, Nighswonger honed her skills playing college soccer for Florida State Seminoles before being drafted by Gotham FC in the 2023 NWSL Draft. Interestingly, back in November 2022, she had considered joining a European club after completing her college career but ultimately entered the NWSL draft as a top midfield prospect. Gotham selected her, and her first season proved transformative.
While primarily an attacker during her college days, head coach Juan Carlos Amoros deployed her at fullback, showcasing her versatility. She featured in 20 league games, starting 17, scoring three goals, and collecting numerous accolades. Most notably, she played a vital role in helping Gotham secure the NWSL Championship trophy in November 2023.

Nighswonger has an impressive international resume, representing the U.S. at every youth level from U16 to U23 before earning her first senior call-up in November 2023. She made her debut as a fullback against China in December, despite being initially called up as a midfielder. Her versatility shone through again when she was part of the 18-player roster for the 2024 Olympics, making five substitute appearances and helping the U.S. secure gold.
In 2024, she was a cornerstone for Gotham, playing every regular season match and leading the team in key stats: passes into the final third (203), tackles won (41), successful crosses (32), and tackles attempted (58). She made 26 appearances, starting 23 of them, showcasing her consistency and impact on the field.
Off the pitch, she’s a Manchester United fan—a fact she might keep under wraps if she signs for Arsenal. Known for her vibrant personality once she feels comfortable, she’s also a celebrator at heart, something Arsenal could use more of (as any fan would agree!).
How can she have a positive impact at Arsenal?
Not afraid to shoot from the edge of the box, attack with intent, or deliver a quality ball into the area, Nighswonger’s versatility immediately catches the eye. While Arsenal still urgently need a pacey winger, this is a signing that shouldn’t fly under the radar. If Arsenal aim to build a squad capable of competing across all competitions—one where Renée Slegers can unlock the full potential of the team—depth is essential. Players like Nighswonger, who can adapt to multiple roles, bring that much-needed flexibility.
Her addition could also shift tactical dynamics, allowing McCabe to push further forward and positively influence the attack with a new left back slotting in. At just 24 years old, with the talent she’s already displayed, Nighswonger’s reported £80k price tag represents excellent value. In a market where players like Naomi Girma command fees of £1 million, securing a prospect with such potential at this price would be a savvy move.
As Arsenal fans wait for official news, now’s the time to check out her highlights. You won’t be disappointed.

sounds like she'd be a great signing. tbf though Arsenal have bought well recently, particularly Mariona, Kafaji and Fox are all top quality players. Kafaji needs a lot more minutes, she is young but she was very comfortable against big teams playing for Hacken in the WCL.
